When is the next Sergeants  Exam?

We can predict that the latest we’ll see the next Sergeant’s test will be in September 2026. Under civil service law, the current list is set to expire in May 2027 (it was released in May 2023 and can only be valid for four years). Finalizing and certifying a list typically takes nine months, so September 2026 would be the latest expected date, though it could happen earlier in 2026.*

When is the next Lieutenants Exam?

For the Lieutenant’s test, the current list expires in December 2027, so the latest the next test could occur is March 2027. However, it may happen sooner, as approximately half of the names on the list have already been promoted.

Courses typically begin approximately 6 to10 months prior to the scheduled exam, so we anticipate starting the next course in the fall of 2026.*

What are the educational requirements to take a promotion exam?

• Sergeant – 64 credits

• Lieutenant – 96 credits

• Captain – Bachelor's degree

Eligibility to be promoted: 

To the rank of Sergeant:

• ​Police Officers must have 3 years on to can take a Sergeant Exam.

• 5 years and 64 credits to be promoted

To the rank of Lieutenant:

• Sergeants must have 1 day in rank to take a Lieutenant Exam

• 2 years in rank, off probation and 96 credits to be promoted

​

To the rank of Captain:

• Lieutenants must have 1 day in rank to take a Captain Exam

• 2 years in rank, off probation and a bachelor’s degree to be promoted

• The fastest anyone can go from PO to Captain is 9 years

• At the Key we believe every student studies at their own pace. We also understand how demanding life and the job can be at times. For these reasons, our material is available for an extended period of time. Rest assured, our content is up for the long haul and will be available to you well into your promotional journey.  We hope you will use this course as a refresher for when the regular course begins.
